Foot drop, sometimes called “drop foot”, refers to difficulty lifting the front of the foot when walking. Foot drop is not a disease, but a symptom of an underlying neurological, muscular, or anatomical condition.

Foot drop is caused by weakness or paralysis of the muscles involved in lifting the front part of the foot and could be a sign of a more serious condition, including:

  • Nerve injury
  • Brain or spinal disorders
  • Muscular disorders

Symptoms

Foot drop may cause you to lift your thigh when you walk, as if climbing the stairs, in order to keep the front of your foot from dragging on the ground. This gait may cause you to slap your foot on the ground, causing numbness or irritation around the feet and toes.

Crossing your legs habitually, wearing a leg cast, or kneeling for extended periods of time can put pressure on the peroneal nerve and cause foot drop.

If you’re experiencing symptoms of foot drop, it could be the sign of something serious. Consult a neurosurgeon for an accurate diagnosis and to explore your treatment options.
