Anaplastic astrocytoma tumors are Grade 3 and 4 astrocytoma tumors, defined by their fast and malignant growth.

Anaplastic astrocytoma tumors form on the astrocyte cells of the brain that protect nerve cells – they differ from benign Grade 1 and 2 astrocytoma tumors in their malignant and aggressive formation. Although these brain tumors are rare, anaplastic astrocytoma tumors typically occur in adults between the ages of 30 and 50 and are more common among men than women.

Surgical removal is most often the first step in treating anaplastic astrocytoma tumors. Your neurosurgeon may be able to remove all of the tumor, but this isn’t always the case, as these tumors tend to grow tentacle-like projections that make them difficult to remove completely. After surgery, a combination of radiation therapy and chemotherapy may be recommended to destroy the remaining portions of the tumor.
