Cavernous malformations in the brain are abnormally formed blood vessels that may leak blood into the brain or spinal cord.

Cerebral cavernous malformations (CCMs) are believed to be hereditary and can generate a wide range of neurological symptoms. The tangled mesh of blood vessels in a CCM have unusually thin walls, making them prone to leakage. This leakage causes hemorrhaging (bleeding) in the area of the CCM, which is the primary cause of symptoms.

Typically, a cerebral cavernous malformation starts out small and may not even produce any symptoms. Over time, however, each hemorrhage causes it to grow and symptoms tend to get progressively worse.
