A subdural hematoma occurs when blood collects between the covering of the brain (the dura) and the surface of the brain.

Subdural hematomas are most often the result of severe head injuries and can quickly become a fatal condition. When the dura traps bleeding in the brain, the tissue is compressed very rapidly and may lead to brain injury or death.

Acute subdural hematomas result from injury, while chronic subdural hematomas are caused by mild or repeated head injuries, especially in older adults who repeatedly fall and hit their heads. A blood clot on the surface of the brain is also referred to as a subdural hematoma and is likewise a serious condition.
